The Poplar Creek Murders

People are dying in east Tennessee. Children and the elderly and young adults in the prime of life, whole families are being found dead of unknown causes. Dr. Lee Turner, the deputy coroner for Bartram County, took the phone call that led her to the discovery of the first body, that of Dr. Alexander Hamrick, an aging scientist retired from the National Research Labs at Oak Ridge.

Lee recently moved back to Carters Mill, the quiet little university town of her childhood, hoping for a slower pace of life and some peace of mind. But the discovery of the Hamrick body and those that follow turn her life and the lives of the citizens of Bartram County inside out. Lee works desperately to get to the bottom of whatever is going on, but not everyone is cooperative and happy with what she is doing. Powerful and sinister forces stand in her way at every turn.

Through it all Lee has the support of her loyal assistant, the normally goodnatured and laid back Buddy Ruff who is not only her righthand man, he can be her righthand fist when the going gets dirty. She can only hope she has enough resources and enough time to solve the mystery as people close to her fall victim and she herself could be the next to die.

So what is Diane to do when Clymene reaches out from prison to her with a plea for help, and FBI profiler Ross Kingsley urges Diane on?

The answer leaves Diane the prime suspect in a bloody murder and puts her in the path of an angry killer who wants her dead. Not even her haven at the RiverTrail Museum of Natural History is safe, as a scandal over possession of stolen Egyptian artifacts threatens to turn Diane out in the street.

Frank Hayes Mystery (Co-authored with Charles Connor)

Murder In Macon

In 1970 a fashionably cynical and somewhat naive young Frank Hayes takes a job at City Hall in racially tense Macon, Georgia.

Mr. John Glover, an eighty-nine year old illiterate black man, asks Frank for assistance in understanding a city condemnation order against Mr. Glover’s home. Frank’s efforts soon put him in the arms of Shirley Willingham, wife of Stafford Willingham, one of Macon’s wealthiest real estate developers. But it is Johnny Mae Glover, the green eyed granddaughter of the old gentleman he is trying to help, who steals Frank’s heart.

Frank is taken under the wing of a grizzled fifty-five year old black ex-convict named Tiny who confides to Frank that he was the husband and convicted murderer of Johnny Mae’s mother. Johnny Mae does not know that black sheep Uncle Tiny is her father. Tiny believes Frank to be an angel sent to put his and Johnny Mae’s worlds right again. But before that can happen, Frank, Tiny, and Johnny Mae are arrested and jailed for the murder of millionaire Stafford Willingham.

With no money, no influence, few friends, and time running out, Frank digs himself deeper into trouble. Armed with only a smart aleck sense of humor and a quick brain, when he uses it, Frank has to figure out who he can trust and what is going on before he and his few brave companions become just the latest items in the obituaries.

Lindsay Chamberlain Archaeology Mysteries

A Rumor of Bones

Lindsay Chamberlain has a problem. People keep finding bodies in shallow graves and bringing the bones to her. It's not that she doesn't know what to do with the remains. An anthropologist who specializes in archaeology, she is an expert in the forensic analysis of bones.

It's the bones of missing children, however, that disturb her, and lately she's had more than her share of them. Someone has been abducting young girls in the area for several years, and their remains have recently been found in shallow graves in a nearby wooded area. And Lindsay is asked to identify them.

A lot of strange things have happened since Lindsay and her colleagues from the Anthropology Department at the University of Georgia first began excavating the Indian settlement at Jasper Creek. First came the grave robbers and pot hunters, then the mysterious opposition that jeopardizes their work.

After the shady lawyer who has orchestrated some of the trouble is murdered and someone attempts to abduct a nine-year-old girl, Lindsay finds herself in the middle of a crime that took place sixty years earlier. Because so much time has passed, it looks as if the murderer will get away with the crime. Can Lindsay provide the proof needed to bring the killer to justice?

Dressed to Die

Some skeletons just won't stay hidden. No one knows that better than University of Georgia archaeologist Lindsay Chamberlain. Still, she is shocked when a skeleton dressed in its Sunday best falls out of a packing crate that had been stored in a kudzu-covered shed on her grandfather's farm for more than sixty years.

When other crates are discovered, each containing a stash of valuable artifacts, Lindsay begins to wonder. Could her beloved grandfather, a prominent archaeologist, have been a thief, a looter - even a murderer?

As Lindsay struggles with these troubling questions, she helps a local private investigator locate the wooded grave of Shirley Foster, a missing faculty member. Lindsay is sucked into the investigation, which leads to more questions than answers. Why did Shirley Foster lie to the world about her life? Who wanted her dead?

As she discovers clues to the identity of the four-hundred-year-old murderer, she is faced with modern-day pirates and two killings that appear to be tied to the excavation. Raging seas, pirates, snakes, and a ghost galleon make this an adventure for Lindsay like no other in her life.

Airtight Case

In a seemingly random attack, forensic anthropologist Lindsay Chamberlain is left for dead in the woods of East Tennessee. The ordeal leaves her with amnesia, and when her memory returns, it is incomplete. To get herself back to normal, Lindsay joins an excavation at an 1830s farm site on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Unlike past digs where she has worked, this site has serious problems of open hostilities and tensions among the crew and an incompetent site director. Plus, the principal investigator is suspected of murdering a local resident and stealing valuable papers.

When very rare sealed lead coffins dating from the 1700s are unearthed, one of them contains the disturbing remains of a woman who appears to have something frighteningly in common with Lindsay. Then one of the crew disappears and Lindsay realizes that unless she solves a complex web of mysteries, she might lose her sanity, or worse, her life.
