Detailed book overview
Halfheads are surgically mutilated convicted criminals lobotomised by the State and cast out to undertake lowly jobs in the community as a warning of the consequences of breaking the law.
Appeals and reprieves are a luxury, and none of them ever comes back—until now.
Dr Fiona Westfield, one of the most notorious serial killers Glasgow, is waking up—desperate for vengeance.
William Hunter made a name for himself by putting Westfield away.
While conducting a normal murder investigation, Will stumbles upon a shocking conspiracy.
Someone is about to restart the VR riots which took the lives of millions eleven years ago.
And Will is being forced into a past he never wants to return to.
Caught trying to fit up Jack Wallace for a crime, Detective Chief Inspector Roberta Steel is demoted while Jack’s sentence is revoked.
But no sooner does he regain his freedom than women start getting attacked again.
Steel however can’t do anything about it, as his lawyers will ensure that she is kicked out of the force if she so much as goes anywhere near him.
Will she stand still and watch as Jack causes chaos in the streets? Or will she bring an end to the mayhem?
Most importantly, how much is Steel willing to sacrifice just to stop him?
Logan McRae Series
DS Logan McRae is having a terrible time on his first week back to work after a year out on the sick.
The mutilated body of a four-year-old boy is discovered in a ditch. A serial killer is on the loose, abducting and killing children.
Even worse is that those who should be helping him at work are the ones giving him a hard time.
With the number of bodies piling up at the morgue, perhaps just as fast as the blizzard is filling the cold granite streets, Logan knows that he has to act fast before it’s too late.
Will he manage to bring down a deranged serial killer taking the lives of innocent children?
A sex worker is mauled to death in Aberdeen’s red light district.
Elsewhere, DS Logan McRae's week has yet again begun in the worst way possible.
Bodies are piling up in the morgue. Some have been burnt, while others have been battered and brutally murdered—including dismembered Labradors.
To make things worse, a PC is fighting for his life and it’s all Logan’s fault.
Almost the entire Grampian Police doesn’t want anything to do with him.
It’s going to be a terrible week and Logan has to do something about it before it’s too late.
A brutal serial rapist leaves a trail of tortured women behind.
That’s however not DS Logan McRae’s biggest worry, as he has to identify a blood-soaked body dumped outside Accident and Emergency.
When his investigations lead him to the local bondage community, Logan is plunged into a world of pornographers, sex-shops and S&M.
Elsewhere, the main suspect in the rape turns out to be the star striker for the Aberdeen Football Club.
Although Logan thinks he is innocent, PC Jackie ‘Ball Breaker’ Watson, who so happens to be his girlfriend, is determined to convict the footballer.
NB: This book is also known as Broken Skin.
The biggest manhunt in the history of Granite City is launched after the discovery of an offshore container full of human meat.
Two decades earlier, a serial killer known as ‘The Flesher’ was turning his victims into oven-ready joints, until justice caught up with him.
Released eleven years later, is it a coincidence that people are dying just when ‘The Flesher’ has gone missing?
When individuals who carried out the original investigation begin mysteriously vanishing, Detective Sergeant Logan McRae comes to the realization that this is one investigation that will forever change Aberdeen.
The Polish community in Aberdeen is under siege.
The bodies of men have been discovered on building sites, nearly dead with their eyes gouged out and the sockets burned.
None of the victims is however willing to speak, with the only witness being a fugitive pedophile.
When the brutality intensifies, Detective Sergeant Logan McRae has to decide just how far he will go in order to get to the bottom of things.
The city is on the verge of Gang warfare; the investigating team is riddled with corruption allegations; and Logan is on the radar of Aberdeen’s most feared crime lord.
Summer has never been this tough…
Despite having a dark past, Richard Knox is now ready to face the future, having already paid the price for his crimes.
Being that Knox has regained his freedom, Detective Sergeant Logan McRae is the last one pleased by the fact that he has to help the vicious rapist settle into Aberdeen.
What’s worse is that he is stuck with DSI Danby, the same man who put Knox in jail.
Everything is however about to go terribly wrong…
Edinburgh gangster Malk the Knife wants his share in Aberdeen’s most recent development surge; local crime lord Wee Hamish Mowat is coming after Logan; and Knox’s past just won’t stay buried.
Aberdeen's beloved mother-daughter singing duo have just made it into the semi-finals of TV hit show Britain's Next Big Star.
Their dream of reality-TV stardom has however just turned into a complete nightmare.
It’s all over the papers, the TV and the internet. The abductors are demanding a huge ransom. If not, they’ll never see Alison and Jenny alive again.
Although time is quickly running out, Detective Sergeant Logan McRae and his team have hit a brick wall.
There is neither a witness nor any forensic evidence.
The price of fame has never been this high.
The first victim is brutally stabbed and strangled, with a burning tire around its neck.
But that’s not all. A mysterious figure is dropping tiny knots of bones on DI Logan McRae’s doorstep.
Opposing drug gangs are also competing over product and territory; two teenage lovers have mysteriously vanished; a sinister figure is crippling Asian immigrants; and Logan has drawn the unsolicited attention of a local crime boss.
The plot thickens when another victim is killed in the same way.
Could the tiny knots of bones perhaps have more meaning?
“A single mistake could cost you everything.”
A huge manhunt is launched after the lifeless body of a little girl is discovered, washed up in the quiet coastal town of Banff.
Although acting Detective Inspector Logan McRae has no say in the case, DCI Roberta Steel’s Major Investigation Team, which has been brought in from Aberdeen, doesn’t seem to be going anywhere with their investigation.
With time not on their side, a desperate Roberta Steel is determined to bring Logan back on her team, no matter the cost.
It soon becomes increasingly evident that a vicious killer treads on the woods of Aberdeenshire, and not everyone will make it out alive…
Acting Detective Inspector Logan McRae has been having a dreadful week.
Whenever his unit finds something worth investigating, Detective Chief Inspector Roberta Steel’s Major Investigation Team casually takes over—leaving the CID with the boring jobs no one wants to do.
Some of their horrible cases are: the one involving Mrs. Black, who dislikes everyone, from her neighbor to the police; identifying the homeless man found dead behind some bins; and trying to find the family of a man who just took his life away.
When lifeless bodies however begin surfacing, Logan knows that his week is just about to get worse.
Detective Sergeant Logan McRae’s team discovers a lifeless body in the woods while conducting a missing-persons investigation. Could it be the remains of the missing businessman they have been looking for, or something darker?
Things get complicated when his former boss, Detective Chief Inspector Roberta Steel, takes over the case.
Furthermore, a new Superintendent from the Serious Organised Crime Task is determined to make Logan’s life a living hell; Professional Standards are gunning for Steel; and Wee Hamish Mowat, Aberdeen’s criminal overlord, is on his death bed, and rival gangs all over the UK want to take his place.
War is on the horizon, and Logan has been caught right at the centre of it all.
Everyone is left speechless after the lifeless body of Detective Inspector Bell is discovered in a crashed car.
This is because Bell died two years ago, and they even buried him. At least that’s what they thought.
Determined to get to the bottom of things, Logan launches an investigation into Bell’s past.
Why did he mysteriously vanish? Where could he have been all along? And why did he even come back from the dead?
But as Logan looks to uncover more about Bell’s past, he soon learns that there are sinister figures who will do whatever it takes to keep the past buried.
Professor Nicholas Wilson, a passionate anti-independence campaigner, routinely leaves the house with his dog one evening in the remote Scottish countryside. However, this time round, he doesn’t return.
Back from a year off on the sick, Inspector Logan McRae doesn’t want anything to do with a huge case. Fate however has other plans for him.
So when another man disappears in a similar manner, the media turns its ruthless attention on him, forcing Logan to immediately get to work.
When body parts however begin getting delivered in the post, it becomes apparent that a dark figure is sending a sinister message.
“No one should ever mess with this family. Not even a serial killer”
The press notoriously refers to him as ‘Sawbones’, a serial killer who abducts young women all around America.
Although the FBI are doing their best to catch him, they just aren’t getting anywhere with their investigations.
Sixteen-year-old Laura Jones is the latest victim in the kidnappings.
But unlike the others, the beautiful blonde girl is the daughter of one of most feared criminal overlords New York.
Laura’s dad is desperate for vengeance, and he knows exactly who to go to.
This is one kidnapping that Sawbones will live to regret—if he lives.
The highly anticipated night of the big Referendum is finally here.
Acting Detective Inspector Logan McRae’s only responsibility is to find a ‘No’ campaigner who has mysteriously disappeared. That shouldn’t be hard, right?
Detective Chief Inspector Roberta Steel however has other plans in mind.
Tensions are also rising in the pubs and on the streets of Aberdeen as the votes are being counted.
Although Logan thinks that his investigations is leading him somewhere, things are not always what they seem.
Everything is about to go terribly wrong.

Every year since, a home-made card with a picture of his gagged daughter, strapped to a chair, is sent to him.
The abductor, notoriously known as ‘The Birthday Boy’, has been kidnapping girls for twelve years, meticulously doing it right before their thirteenth birthday.

With his family ruined, his career on the rocks and the possibility of ending up in prison becoming a fast reality, Ash seems to be losing the plot.
