Detailed book overview
“From tragedy comes destiny.”
17-year-old Cassidy is being singlehandedly brought up by her father in San Diego, California. Although she is full of life, Cassidy is constantly haunted by the fact that her mother died while giving birth to her. She often thinks about it, but always gains comfort from her father’s love and protection—until she uncovers the truth.
She comes to learn of her Behesian origin, gifted with dark magic and the ability to do things beyond human comprehension. All this was passed on to her by her mother as a parting gift. But she is not the only one.
Although her father has kept it a secret, it has been doing it because she is the perfect test subject for The Brotherhood where he works, rather than to protect her.
Will she stay with her father, the only family she has ever known, or join other Behesians in the struggle for survival?
The Deamhan Chronicles
"Some wounds just never heal."
A wide-eyed and blameless Veronica Austin lives with her parents in suburban Minneapolis.
Her innocence prevents her from taking notice of her parents’ secret lives; members of The Brotherhood group formed for the sole purpose of observing the mysterious psychic vampires by the name Deamhan.
But what if vampires aren't what they should really be afraid of?
When Veronica’s mother is gruesomely murdered, her father quickly relocates her to San Diego in a bid to bury the terrible events of her past.
As months quickly turn into years and childhood is overcome with adulthood, Veronica’s yearn for closure sees her move back to Minneapolis.
Her resolve to uncover the truth behind her mother's tragedy will however lead to unearthing discoveries beyond her wildest dreams.
Kei singlehandedly spent decades underpinning the influence of the Deamhan in Minneapolis, so much that even the vampires feared them.
Watching over Ramanga, Lamia, Metusba, Lugat and basically everyone else, Kei stood up to the humans and vampires when no one else could; enabling the Deamhan to stand their ground in the city, rather than wimp away in fear.
Things seemed to be running smoothly until Selene, Kei’s sibling, arrived and freed Lucius from Limbo. What ensued was complete chaos, as they not only dethroned Kei but also butchered his supporters.
They go to extreme lengths to capture him and deliver what they believe will be ‘justice’ for his crimes; blissfully unaware that no force could ever keep Kei from Minneapolis—his city. A city which he built from nothing!
Confusion reigns supreme in the Deamhan world. Lucius, an Ancient Lugat who was once dreaded, is now no longer shackled by Limbo. His mission, to go on a sustained period of unrestrained killing in order to exterminate any remnant of traitors in Minneapolis.
Meanwhile, the return of The Brotherhood—accompanied with their increasing population of vampires—causes a stir among the surviving Deamhan who opt to stay behind rather than run away from the city.
As the number of casualties increase, humans and Deamhan have little option but to pick a side; either allow Lucius to set the Pure Ones free or step up against him and risk destroying their already depleted numbers in the city.
“She gave me her blood, and my life changed forever.”
Anastasia was for the longest time the one and only influential figure in Maris’s already feeble life. There was a time when Maris believed she owed her everything. But why couldn’t she? Anastasia, her sire, was the one who after all gave her immortality and the undying yearn for the thrill and energy that comes from the blood of her victims.
Now however, vampires are constantly after her while humans want to use her as a weapon; convinced that she is some sort of apotropaic figurine that could bring an end to all Deamhan.
But Maris just wants to live; to be herself. Is that too much to ask?
Ayden, a Metusba Deamhan, has for over a century been patiently waiting for the opportune moment to unleash revenge on Anastasia; a Ramanga Deamhan who is responsible for the cruel demise of his sire.
It is while duteously and diligently serving Kyra, the oldest of their kind, that Ayden eventually gets the chance to deliver the retribution that he has so yearned for.
But the Metusba Deamhan soon finds himself in a dilemma. He owes a lot to Anastasia’s offspring, Maris, who Kyra is determined to kill.
Stuck between maintaining his loyalty to Kyra and protecting Maris, Ayden has to act—and act fast!
“The demise of renowned Deamhan elders has left a massive hole in their society.”
Amenirdis, the Queen of Limbo and the Dark Mother of Deamhan, now freely roams the world. Her sinister plan of completely wiping off her kind rests upon the blood of Maris and the Dark Curse tablet.
When news of her return spreads like wildfire, the Dorvo Coven—vampires who are sworn enemies of Deamhan—are awoken. One in particular is distinctly after the Dark Curse tablet, determined to bring an end to all Deamhan on the planet.
But as she seeks after the broken Dark Curse tablet and the blood of Maris, she soon realizes that there are Deamhan who just won’t give in without an almighty fight.
With these two forces on a collision course, no one is safe. Not even the supernatural baddies of the dark underworld.
“To serve the Queen you must fight to stay alive.”
Minneapolis is no longer a place of refuge for the Deamhan now that Amenirdis, the Queen of Limbo, is free. The beloved home of the psychic vampires has now become a place of fury and anarchy; one that will be difficult for the Deamhan to overcome.
An already terrible situation turns for the worst when sanguine vampires and other supernatural creatures convene in numbers; leaving Deamhan completely outnumbers in their own territory.
It becomes quite clear what the rule is; bow to the Queen of Limbo or face the full wrath of her rage.
“For Deamhan, revenge is the best dish of all.”
It’s Paris during the 1840s. Vampires are split into two groups; the Dorvo who feed on human blood and the Deamhan who thrive off the psychic energy of their human victims. Remy, a bourgeoisie Deamhan sired by Julian, crosses paths with Ruby—a stunning Dorvo vampire.
Feeling the pain of betrayal, Remy would relish nothing more than revenging on Julian and every other Deamhan. Ruby on the other hand is from the enemy side, but she has handed him freedom that has come with great reprieve.
For this reason, Remy must as such decide on whom to trust and whom to destroy; all in a tale of torn relationships, suspicion and forgiveness.
“Choices must be made.”
From being ambushed by a random Deamhan vampire, to being rescued and handed over to The Brotherhood by her Deamhan friends Remy and Anastasia, Veronica Austin has seen it all.
The Brotherhood is a mysterious organization that observes the psychic vampires; an organization on which her parents were secretly involved with for the longest time.
Years later, Veronica returns to Minneapolis to be with her fellow Deamhan having recovered from her attack.
But when dirty secrets are uncovered, she must pick a side. Will it be The Brotherhood that fueled her family’s tragedy or the Deamhan who have double-crossed her?
