Detailed book overview
Jenny is the director of a London publishing company, a self-contained, independent and successful woman. She is completely unprepared for the exciting adventure she embarks on when she meets the handsome Marc at a party, and impulsively accompanies him to his family home in France. The setting is perfect, the sex fantastic...It seems like the beginning of something amazing, even if Marc seems to be nursing secrets. Then, on the way home from a perfect evening, in the middle of the French countryside, he simply vanishes.
Jenny can only return to England alone. But she cannot stop thinking of Marc and soon she is obsessed with his disappearance. Where is he and why did he abandon her? Before long Jenny is on a dangerous trail that will lead her towards a terrifying revelation...
Dr Nicola Drew has always had very strong insights into the health of her patients. She can tell at a glance if women are pregnant before they know themselves, and she seems to sense instinctively whether critically ill patients are going to live or die. But she detects no warning signs whatsoever when her artist fiancé dumps her in a very dramatic, public and humiliating way, three weeks before they were due to go to Indonesia together to work for his father.
Unable to change her contract, Nicola has to fly to Jakarta on her own, still devastated by her relationship breakup and with no idea why her fiancé behaved quite so cruelly.
She lands in a city where big changes are taking place. The currency is collapsing, pro-democracy riots are springing up and the job she has been hired to do in a city center clinic is not all it seems...

In the wake of the tragedy, each of these people must try to rebuild their lives.
But how can life ever be the same again when you’ve heard over a thousand people dying in the water around you?

Lady Evelyn Herbert was the daughter of the Earl of Carnarvon, brought up in stunning Highclere Castle. Popular and pretty, she seemed destined for a prestigious marriage, but she had other ideas. Instead, she left behind the world of society balls and chaperones to travel to the Egyptian desert, where she hoped to become a lady archaeologist, working alongside her father and Howard Carter in the hunt for an undisturbed tomb.
In November 1922, their dreams came true when they discovered the burial place of Tutankhamun, packed full of gold and unimaginable riches, and she was the first person to crawl inside for three thousand years. She called it the “greatest moment” of her life—but soon afterwards everything changed, with a string of tragedies that left her world a darker, sadder place.
Newspapers claimed it was “the curse of Tutankhamun,” but Howard Carter said no rational person would entertain such nonsense. Yet fifty years later, when an Egyptian academic came asking questions about what really happened in the tomb, it unleashed a new chain of events that seemed to threaten the happiness Eve had finally found.

They gossip, they comfort each other, and they offer support through the setbacks. But their biggest challenge is keeping their dear friend Dottie safe from herself.

Hollywood Love Stories looks at 14 real-life love affairs across the golden age of the movies, from the 1920s to the 1970s, from Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford to Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini.

Along the way we see behind the public face of a whole range of relationships, from the straightforwardly romantic to the messily divided, and from the famous (and infamous) to those that were played out below the radar of public opinion.

This book is full of surprises, from the "undying love" that the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II, felt for his Tsarina, to the unlikely love that flourished between Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
Amongst them, too, are less happy loves - of Crown Prince Rudolph for his 17-year-old lover, Countess Mary Vetsera, or, in the 1940s, of the Prince of Sweden, refused consent to marry the girl he loved - she only became his princess over 30 years later. Bringing the reader right up to modern times, and touching, absorbing, and tragic by turns, these stories bring the glamour and the contradictions of royalty vividly to life.
With the letters, personal accounts, and memorabilia that tell the real tales behind the contemporary headlines.
