Barbara Underwood books in order

Barbara Underwood is an Australian author of fantasy novels, best known for writing A Quest for Ancient Wisdom Series.

Born and raised in Sydney as the only child of German migrants, her interest in storytelling began as early as the third grade when she wrote a short children's book for a class project.

Although Barbara kept writing throughout her adult life, she only did so as a hobby, as she had set her sights on other interests and objectives.

Completing a correspondence course in professional writing, coupled with the wealth of experience she acquired after traveling and learning about things that interested her like ancient history, myths and legends, played a pivotal role in preparing her for the writing journey ahead.

Barbara made her debut as a novelist in 2012 with Rhuna, Keeper of Wisdom, the first book in the A Quest for Ancient Wisdom Series.

She currently lives in the sleepy town of Tumut, in rural New South Wales, with her husband, Bobby, who is also an author.

Detailed book overview

A Quest for Ancient Wisdom

Rhuna, Keeper of Wisdom

In the ancient, mystical past when an idyllic Atlantis-like civilization flourished, its people with exceptional powers could build giant stone structures like the Pyramids, and transform elements such as sand to stone and metal to gold with concentrated energy of the mind.

This utopian Atlan Empire is rocked when one of its most preeminent Masters rebels and seeks to subvert the ideals of Atlan society. Roaming the countryside in a black robe, misusing his powers on innocent people, he becomes known as the dreaded Dark Master.

On a distant and isolated island on the fringes of the Atlan Empire, a young girl named Rhuna comes of age when she meets a man from Atlán and learns that her father was an Atlan Master who was killed in his attempt to destroy the Dark Master.

Journeying across oceans and ancient worlds, Rhuna learns to master her inherent mental powers, transforming elements and summoning visions by means of the Gazing of the Waters. Unlike her peers, however, Rhuna discovers she has an extra power, namely the ability to summon visions mentally, without incantations or powders.

When the Dark Master’s activities become a threat to the peaceful Atlan Empire, the Atlan Masters come to realize that they cannot defeat him without Rhuna’s special visionary powers to observe the Dark Master’s activity and whereabouts.

Powerful conjurers cause upheaval with their sinister magic, driving people from their homes.

An isolated society claiming to adhere to the ways of the First Atlans, appear to be fighting a losing battle against these followers of the Dark Master. In desperation, Rhuna combines her magical powers and Varappan technology to do the unthinkable. What she does, however, is forbidden, and brings about a rift between her and her own father. Rhuna may have headed down a path from which there is no turning back…

The Rhuna Tales

The Summer Sojourn

Rhuna is a woman who lives in the mystical past when a highly-advanced civilization like Atlantis spread knowledge across the world and built megalithic structures such as the pyramids. In Rhuna’s world, these intellectual people of an idyllic society are called Atlans, and many of them possess the ability to change matter with the power of their minds.

Although Rhuna is only part Atlan, she has inherited these Atlan abilities, not only to transform elements such as sand to stone and metal to gold, but also to summon visions of distant places and events.

The first book in the full-length novel series begins with Rhuna as a young adolescent, when she discovers her heritage and special powers. This time period is the setting for the mini novella, The Summer Sojourn.

In this short novella, Rhuna attends a special school on a lovely Pacific island, and during the summer break, she visits a nearby island where she mingles with the native residents. Everything appears fine on the surface until one terrifying night in which Rhuna and her group must flee from the island or be killed in a brutal uprising.

Rhuna and her fellow Atlans are shocked to learn about the lie and the events which led to this conflict between two very different groups of people.

The Celebration

Rhuna is a woman who lives in the mystical past when a highly-advanced civilization like Atlantis spread knowledge across the world and built megalithic structures such as the pyramids. In Rhuna’s world, these intellectual people of an idyllic society are called Atlans, and many of them possess the ability to change matter with the power of their minds. Although Rhuna is only part Atlan, she has inherited these Atlan abilities, not only to transform elements such as sand to stone and metal to gold, but also to summon visions of distant places and events.

This short story describes an event in Rhuna's life that takes place in the middle of Winter when the Atlan people celebrate a festival very similar to our modern-day Christmas. The time of this event is between the first full-length book (Rhuna, Keeper of Wisdom) and the second book (Rhuna: Crossroads) when Rhuna has a 10-year-old daughter. When heavy snow traps a group of people in the mountains near the City of Atlan, Rhuna discovers another aspect of her mental powers which can save them.
