Nadine Brandes books in order

Nadine Brandes is an American award-winning author of young adult fantasy.

The recipient of the Carol-Award, she is known for writing the Out of Time Series, and standalones including Fawkes (2018), Romanov (2019), and Wishtress (2022).

An adventurer, freelance editor and lover of Christ, writing has always been part of Nadine’s life.

She notoriously acquired the skill of writing with a fountain pen and started maintaining a journal at the age of nine.

For the longest time, writing was a routine thing to her, much like eating, sleeping and taking a shower, until 2010 when she began writing the Out of Time series.

Nadine, her beloved husband and their fast growing children are building a Tiny House on wheels with the sole purpose of painting the world in shalom.

Whenever she isn't too preoccupied with writing novels about living boldly, Nadine can be found adventuring through Middle Earth or sampling out a new chai.

Fawkes

A magical retelling of the Gunpowder Plot that will sweep you back in time to a divided England where plagues turn victims to stone.

In seventeenth-century London two forces rule the people: the color powers and the Stone Plague. Brown masks can manipulate wood. Black masks control the night. And red masks . . . Well, red is the color of blood.

Young Thomas Fawkes’s Color Test has finally arrived, and he’s sure his father, the infamous Guy Fawkes, will present him with a mask and Thomas will finally bond with a color. He desperately hopes for a gray mask so he can remove the stone that has invaded his body and will ultimately take his life.

But when Guy refuses to give Thomas his mask or even his presence, Thomas has no place in school or society. His only hope is to track down his father and demand a mask. His father has bigger plans: to kill the king.

Thomas must join forces with Guy if he wants to save his own life. When his errands for the cause bring him time and again to Emma Areben, a former classmate, Thomas is exposed to a whole new brand of magic. And Emma doesn’t control just one color—she controls them all.

Emma wants to show Thomas the full power of color magic, but it goes against everything his father is fighting for. If Thomas sides with his father, he could save his own life—which would destroy Emma and her family. To save one, he must sacrifice the other. No matter Thomas’s choice, one thing is clear: once the decision is made and the color masks have been put on, there’s no turning back.

Romanov

My name is Anastasia. The history books say I died. They don’t know the half of it.

Anastasia “Nastya” Romanov was given a single mission: to smuggle an ancient spell into her suitcase on her way to exile in Siberia. It might be her family’s only salvation. But the leader of the Bolshevik army is after them, and he’s hunted Romanov before.

Nastya’s only chances of saving herself and her family are either to release the spell and deal with the consequences, or to enlist help from Zash, the handsome soldier who doesn’t act like the average Bolshevik. Nastya has only dabbled in magic, but it doesn’t frighten her half as much as her growing attraction to Zash. She likes him. She thinks he might even like her.

That is, until she’s on one side of a firing squad . . . and he’s on the other.
