You Can't Get There from Here: A Year on the Fringes of a Shrinking World

What happens when cable televangelism and gay pride lock horns on a deserted Polynesian island? How about when Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien arrives in newly independent Kazakhstan? And when DNA tests confirm the existence of a mythical lost tribe of Israel?

Journalist Gayle Forman, in this collection of witty and touching tales, takes readers to the physical and cultural fringes of the earth as she communes with lovelorn transvestites, persecuted punk rockers, unemployed prostitutes, and guerrilla linguists, who all show the human side of globalization.

Traveling with her husband, Forman also provides a deep personal picture of marriage and globetrotting.

Sisters in Sanity

Ever had the out-of-control dream? The one where you are so sure of yourself yet no one else will listen to you?

For Brit Hemphill, the out-of-control dream comes to pass when she is enlisted by her dad at Red Rock—a bogus treatment center claiming to cure rebellious teen girls.

There, the sixteen-year-old is forced into therapy; with her hope of getting her life back resting in the hands of an underqualified group of counselors, an uncompromising Sheriff and an uncaring shrink.

Whereas her dad thinks that Red Rock will help save her deviant daughter, Brit is convinced that the place is doing more harm than good to her.

It’s hard to know who to trust in a place when ratting on your peer earns you privileges.
