Detailed book overview
In 1632, Lord August Godwine, an Austrian nobleman, commissions Swiss clockmaker Frederick Jori to create a miniature city of automatons to amuse himself and impress the aristocracy. When Jori refuses to commit offenses against God, he undergoes brutal, unimaginable torture until the once-pious craftsman surrenders to his fate. But what he hides in the innocuous-appearing automatons ignites a horrific apocalypse—one that will not be realized for 400 years.
In 21st century San Francisco, Ireland Barton is a brilliant, successful young scientist, but there is one drawback to her perfect life—she suffers from a rare immune disorder that keeps her confined in a plastic bubble. When a new virus is released on the world, she begins a heart-pounding race to find a cure to save what is left of humanity and battle malevolent forces housed in 17th century figurines.
As two worlds—two time periods—collide, will Ireland unravel the mystery of the dolls before the clock winds down on humanity?

Opus of the Dead
What can the dead teach the living?
Landry Sinclair has a story to tell—listen carefully.
I played the professional Los Angeles career woman. Beneath the façade, I was lonely, ashamed, with little self-awareness. My plans for upward mobility were squashed when I fell into the hands of a ruthless serial killer. I became entangled in his rich web of heinous acts. After he slipped a date-rape drug in my drink, then brutally tortured me, I awakened to an inescapable nightmarish realm on the wrong side of the mirror.
Locked inside a decaying mansion, unable to escape, I soon learned I was not alone.
Will I be forced to idle here for an eternity, peering through the mirror into my former world, helplessly watching as a homicidal monster butchers woman after woman?
We watch life through windows, mirrors, and doors—pay attention.
I know because I sing the Opus of the Dead.
Nature cycles through her paces: earth, air, water, and fire. I suspect there is a connection between these elements and the hereafter.
Propelled forward by a promise, my fellow spirits and I wander the world of the living searching for our purpose.
Will delving into the metaphysical side of death, the science of the afterlife, provide the answers? Maybe if I can understand why I continue to exist, I will be able to rest in peace. That is the goal—the ultimate finale—sans encores.
The soundtrack of my death snakes through my story. On the plane of the dead, I continue to reconcile this existence with the off-kilter dissonance of the ever-present music resounding in my mind.
The Survivor Diaries
THE APOCALYPSE— WOULD YOU SURVIVE?
I’m Laura, and I survived global nuclear war. When I walked out into the devastated landscape, I didn’t find zombies, witches or vampires— what I found was infinitely worse; it was real.
IS THIS OUR RECKONING?
Our tormentor is no longer the enemy; it is what’s left of the desperate earth. My neighbors are starving and sick from the biochemicals in the air. Our food, water and meds are running low. Our only hope is to come together to stay alive.
WHO WILL LEAD US TO SALVATION?
Certainly not me. Why would it be me? The Army Colonel should be the leader of the Village, not me
CAN MY STORY HAVE A HAPPILY EVER AFTER? CAN IT HAVE ANY EVER AFTER?

FOR EVERY END, THERE IS A BEGINNING
Growth must happen— so says Darwin, anyway. I’m Laura, and my Villagers and I continue to make our way through the decay of post-apocalyptic Coastal California during the nuclear winter and fallout of the Last War.
THE EARTH IS ENRAGED AND SEEKING REVENGE FOR OUT TRESPASSES—WITH LEFTOVER SURPRISES IN THE RUBBLE OF OUR CITY, DORMANCY CAN’T LAST FOREVER.
When the Plague runs murderously through the Village, and lives and psyches continue to be pushed to their limits, I’m faced with a gut-wrenching decision. But are the Villagers ready to take the risk and leave this catastrophic reality for what could be a worse unknown? Should we follow the ambiguous motives of Colonel Jackson?
THE APOCALYPSE—I’VE GOT THIS—RIGHT?
I’m Laura, and I juggle it all; family, new love, pregnancy, and my job’s hella demanding. Oh, and I do it all in the snow-drenched, post-apocalypse of global nuclear war. My job is keeping my people alive.
WE HAVE FINALLY MADE IT TO OUR PROMISED GARDEN OF EDEN ONLY TO FIND IT NEVER REALLY EXISTED.
From the ashes of the old world, evil has risen. I toyed with it—I wasn’t ready—and it’s plunged me into a downward spiral towards blinding darkness. Now, I might be losing the one thing that makes me a leader; my humanity.
And that evil has set off a chain reaction. A clan of Wanderers might be on their way to take everything we have built, or perhaps to implode the Village with their basic needs: food, water, and shelter.
JUST WHEN YOU THINK YOU GOT THE HANG OF THE APOCALYPSE …
WHO DID THIS TO US?
If you aren’t ready for the answer, then you don’t want to hear the next part of this story. Please trust me. If you have come across this diary, this transcript of truth, close it now—burn it—or risk a tear in your soul that can never be repaired.
YOU’RE READING ON? REALLY?
One last try—things are about to get dark—very dark.
REMEMBER—YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!
THE FINAL CHAPTER OF OUR SAGA HAS BEGUN
In the seven years since the Last War, we have found hope in the little things. We have enough fresh food to eat, safety in natural shelters, and the ice age has come to an end.
WE HAVE DRIFTED ON THE WINDS IN RELATIVE PEACE—UNTIL NOW!
Having survived the floods caused by the extreme climate change of a nuclear winter, we are now faced with an old ally—and our oldest foe. Sucked back into the web, I wonder if it is time to turn away from the fight and continue happily with the Janie Doe Tribe or finish the rebellion we began in the mountainous folds of Carmel Valley.
